Thornton Waldo Burgess was born in Sandwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on  January 14, 1874. As a youth he worked year round in order to earn money. Some of his jobs included tending cows, picking trailing arbutus or berries, shipping water lilies from local ponds, selling candy and trapping muskrats. William C. Chipman, one of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland. This habitat became the setting of many of Thornton’s stories in which he refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch.  He became a conservationist and author of children’s stories, using his own observations of nature as a basis for them. Thornton  Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years, leaving a rich field of 170 books, mostly for children, and over 15,000 stories for daily columns in newspapers. He died on June 5, 1965.

The "Mother West Wind" Books

“Old Mother West Wind came down from the Purple Hills in the golden light of the early morning. Over her shoulders was slung a bag—a great big bag — and in the bag were all of Old Mother West Wind's children, the Merry Little Breezes.”

And so begins Thornton W. Burgess's “Old Mother West Wind,” his first book in his long running — and much beloved — series of children's nature books about the Green Meadow and the Green Forest. These stories have delighted children for almost one hundred years now, and look to continue that tradition for another hundred years as parents rediscover their old favorite stories and repeat them to their own children. Young readers travel to the timeless world of the Green Forest and Smiling Pool. Gentle lessons about nature, the environment, and the “lesser folk of fur and feathers” for today’s young readers and listeners. Any imaginative child will be captivated by these books. The chapters are short, with simple language that children will identify with. Read aloud to pre-readers, or read by children themselves (every book is in easy-to-read 14-point type for children), these books will surely be family favorites in no time, if they aren't already.

The Christmas Reindeer” is part of the rich heritage of children’s books left to us by Thornton W. Burgess, and was published in 1926. This edition includes the original seven full-page illustrations and nine smaller ones in the text by Rhoda Chase.

Have you ever wondered just where and how Santa Claus gets his reindeer? And what of the people who live in Northland, near the North Pole? What stories do they have about the mysterious St. Nick who lives there? Children will love hearing, and reading, about the discoveries of Tuktu and Aklak, two Eskimo children who raise reindeer in the Northlands and live near the mysterious Kringle Valley.
Tuktu is curious why every year eight reindeer from the many herds disappear, and then return in the spring. Her father says the owner of those whose reindeer is blessed because those reindeer always become the best in the herd.

Why is this? What is so special about Kringle Valley? And why doesn’t anyone ever go there?

The three books in the “Tommy’s Wishing-Stone Adventures” trilogy are a part of Thornton W. Burgess’s  long running — and much beloved — series of children’s nature books about the Green Meadow, the Green Forest, and the Smiling Pool. In the first book, "Tommy and the Wishing Stone," a sulky, unhappy young boy by the name of Tommy (is that, perhaps, Farmer Brown’s boy?) happens across a sitting-stone that unexpectedly grants his wish to become a meadow-mouse! Seeing the world from the viewpoint of a small woodland creature is quite an education for Tommy.

After experiencing life as a grouse, a mink, and a humble toad, Tommy goes on more adventures in “Tommy’s Wishes Come True,” and sees life as a rabbit, a squirrel, a raccoon, and finally a wild goose, and the dangers they all face from being hunted. In “Tommy’s Change of Heart” Tommy lives as a fox, a beaver, a muskrat, and finally a bear, and decides he would rather be a friend to the animals than a hunter of them.

The “Tommy’s Wishing-Stone Adventures” includes: “Tommy and the Wishing-Stone,” “Tommy’s Wishes Come True,” and “Tommy’s Change of Heart.” This volume includes all the stories and the original twenty-three illustrations by Harrison Cady from the first editions published in 1915, 1915, and 1921, respectively.
